Wizard 101

Ok, so several people would say it's a slimmed down version of a World of Warcraft or Everquest, but my youngest got me into this game a few weeks ago, and I've not been able to stop since.

Basically it's a MMORPG set to a card game like Magic. You level up, and get better cards, and then you go out to waste bizarrely cute homicidal beasts so you can... level up, and get better cards. This is the basic point of all RPGs, MMO or pen-and-paper (at the core rules level, let's not start that flame war) but the world is pretty involved, and teamwork is encouraged but not rammed down your throat. It's also turn based, which I love considering I grew up at the beginning of the 8 bit era, where RPG monsters waited their turns politely before hitting us with their Nintendo Hard f-u move.

My son is a few levels higher than me at this point (and rising fast, he's 12, home for the summer, and I'm 32, working to get food on the table), so when I have a particularly annoying boss battle I'll call out to him, "I need help" from the other room. He'll teleport to me, summon his "Level 5 kill everything not us in the room" card and then be on his way back to slaying hoards of Egyptian themed creepy/cute monsters in the "more advanced than Dad" world he's gone off to.

It's becoming a tradition for us to play all day on Sundays (when the Beautiful One has her America's Next Top Model marathon so I don't feel quite as bad for wasting time on the computer) and it's quite a bit of fun.

Anyway, not meaning to advertise, just sharing something fun.
